For the first time, the threshold of more than one million new CoV infections per day worldwide has been exceeded, according to a count by the AFP news agency.

With more than 7.3 million new infections reported by authorities around the world between Dec. 23 and Dec. 29, there were an average of 1.045 million infections with the coronavirus per day. This is the highest figure since the pandemic began two years ago.

The number is significantly higher than the previous record, which was set between April 23 and 29, when an average of 817,000 new infections occurred daily. More than 85 percent of the latest infections are concentrated in Europe and North America.

WHO warns of ‘tsunami’
In France, more than 200,000 new infections were recorded yesterday for the second day in a row. Spain also reached a new high with 161,688 new infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) had warned Wednesday of a “tsunami” of CoV cases and a collapse of health systems because of the highly contagious Omicron variant of the virus.

Drosten cautiously optimistic
Yesterday, however, Berlin virologist Christian Drosten expressed cautious optimism about further developments on ZDF’s “heute journal.” He said there were indications that the pandemic situation was developing into an endemic one.

“Endemic situation means: this virus is becoming a cold virus,” he said. “It’s a good situation, of course, when you have a virus that doesn’t make you sick as much anymore, but it’s easily transmissible, so it basically finds all the immune gaps in the population.”
